Similarly, an author search on anna letitia barbauld (not spelled laetitia) limited to 1773 will retrieve the Miscellaneous Pieces, in Prose, which she wrote with her brother John under her maiden name Aikin, but browsing barbauld as author does not retrieve this first printing, although this method does find subsequent corrected editions of the volume. Because Barbauld is identified in the ESTC record in the 700 field as an author, the first edition can be found by an author search, but it cannot be found in ECCO by author browse, which doesnât have that information. Nor can the item be found by searching anna letitia aikin, because she only used her initials on the publication. Other databases may list Barbauldâs maiden name instead for this early edition, so if you know the first edition date of an item, but canât find it, try different strategies to locate it. In the case of ECCO, the ESTC number can also be searched, which would allow you to find the exact copy you require, so the two resources can be used in tandem.
ProQuest/Chadwyck-Healy offers transcriptions of eighteenth-century fiction and drama via Literature Online (LION). Eighteenth-Century Fiction comprises ninety-six works of prose from thirty-one authors associated with the rise of the novel and published between 1700 and 1780. Categories cover epistolary (Samuel Richardsonâs Pamela and Clarissa, Tobias Smollettâs Humphrey Brinker, Frances Burneyâs Evelina), sentimental (works by Laurence Sterne, Frances Brooke, Charlotte Lenox, Frances Sheridan), documentary (Daniel Defoeâs Robinson Crusoe), allegorical and satirical (Jonathan Swiftâs Gulliverâs Travels, Samuel Johnsonâs Rasselas), and gothic (Clara Reeveâs The Old English Baron, Horace Walpoleâs The Castle of Otranto) novels. Editions used to create the transcriptions are noted in the bibliographic details. Texts can be searched by keywords, title, author, publication dates, genre, and author details (life dates, gender, nationality). Keyword searches in the full text will display the results with the keywords in context.
English Drama has more than 3,900 plays from the Middle Ages to the end of the nineteenth century, 1,137 published between 1700 and 1799, or 861 performed during that time frame. Representative playwrights include Susanna Centlivre, George Farquhar, Henry Fielding, David Garrick, John Gay, Oliver Goldsmith, John Hawkesworth, Eliza Haywood, Elizabeth Inchbald, Robert Jephson, Charlotte Lennox, Hannah More, Mary Pix, Richard Sheridan, and Catherine Trotter. Entries typically contain bibliographic details for the source text, genre, date first published, date first performed, front matter with list of characters, and main text. The database can be searched by keywords in play, author, title, speaker, first performed, publication date, genre, gender, and literary period fields. For both English Drama and Eighteenth-Century Fiction, the transcribed text permits more precise searches than OCRâd text in other digital databases, and it may be easier to use keywords to find themes explored through the literary works. English Poetry (from the eighth through the early twentieth century), is another potentially useful collection in LION.
